What You'll Learn

There's no one size fits all here.  During our sessions we will get to the heart of your goals and the music that inspires you.  We have vast experience teaching and playing rock, pop, indie, instrumental and many of their sub-genres.  We can also touch on prog, metal, jazz, and blues as well.  You'll learn to read tab, chord charts, simple and complex rhythms as well as get a solid foundation of technical proficiency that can be applied to any style.

Other topics we can cover are: music theory, ensemble playing, guitar effects, guitar maintenance, Rock N Roll Revival prep (for local middle school and high school students on their way to or attending Sherwood HS), as well as college and audition prep.

From our first conversation and trial lesson Justin immediately put me at ease, and 6 months later (1 hr lessons, once a week) I have noticed a marked improvement in both my playing and my understanding of the instrument. He seems to have an even distribution of younger and adult students, which reflects his aptitude as a teacher and ability to relate to just about anyone. He’s very friendly and approachable, and extremely competent. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend anyone to Justin - newbie or stubborn, set-in-her ways singer/songwriter like myself.

My son has been working with Justin for about a year and I’ve seen a huge improvement in his guitar skills. He looks forward to his weekly lessons and loves his personalized approach. Justin has not only taught my son how to play the songs he wants to play, but is also focusing on theory and improvising. Justin is extremely professional, very organized and works well with all age groups. He clearly loves what he does and we would recommend him to all of my friends!

“Justin is an extremely talented musician and teacher, and has the right balance of knowledge, patience and humor to make lessons both educational and entertaining. I would highly recommend Justin to anyone who is serious about learning music and how to play the guitar - including anyone interested in furthering their current abilities.

— Hope D. (Research Pharmacist)
Justin knows how to keep things fresh and interesting while making sure I’ve got the basics down, and his enthusiasm is infectious. He’s worked with me to identify my goals and tailor my lessons toward meeting them.

— Bobby Seng (Software Engineer)
Justin has introduced my son to a variety of music genres and encouraged him to further explore his own musical tastes. Most importantly, he has instilled of love of playing and learning. Lack of self confidence used to keep him from playing in front of people, now he is not often without the guitar in his hands and is proud to show off his skills. HIGHLY recommend!!

— Cari B.
He is the quintessential music professional - completely grounded in prestigious, formal education, and demonstrates his ongoing passion for everything guitar. Justin takes his time, keeps me progressing at my pace, shows incredible patience, and genuinely wants his students to enjoy building their guitar skills. While he focuses me on learning to read music and play guitar, I appreciate his interest in talking about the kind of music and performers I like.

— John Seng (President, Spectrum/ Chair, GlobalHealthPR)
He has a great approach to teaching that is personalized to every student. He had my son choose some goals to work towards and they continue to update those (since a 9 year old never knows what he wants for more than 5 minutes!).

— Tracy O.
After having taken lessons at a local music store, I was hesitant to start lessons again, but I am so glad I did. I no longer feel like I am being rushed out the door or given a “cookie cutter” approach to learning to play the guitar. The lessons keep me challenged and I’m so pleased to be playing music I didn’t think I would be able to learn. I highly recommend Justin to guitar players of all levels!

— Donna (Speech Pathologist)
I like that he allows me to explore the music that I am interested in. He also gives me tips that help me improve my skills so that the song sounds more musical and cool

— Domenico M.
Once I started taking lessons with him I discovered that he’s not just an awesome guitar player but he really knows how to break down the theory part of guitar that most guitar teachers can’t or don’t do well. And the technical stuff has vastly improved my guitar skills! His teaching style is very disciplined with an easy going personality.
